While not part of the question post, this was requested prior and i'm giving it its own post.

NOTE: I am writing all this as someone who, as of this time, isn't sold on obama-love. The current probability of me voting for him, should he be the democrat nominee, is not necessarily all that high. The probably of me voting for Clinton, is even less. To be even more honest, though, i cannot say with 100% certainty that i would make either statement if i lived in, say, north dakota.

I'm not Barack. I'm not trying to win any elections. I skipped school the day they handed out the "How To Play Nice With Others" handbook.

A lot of the feminists mentioned here, including Ferraro, are really from another time. Which is not an excuse. some will claim that black men had the right to vote first. Really? Ever hear of the poll taxes? Terrorism? Yeah, no, that 'right' frequently only existed on paper.

And where were have the white women ever been when women of color wanted rights?
who the fuck knows, they sure as hell weren't advocating.

So, yeah, Ferraro

My take on that she said it? Or my take on what she said?

That she said it, felt comfortable making such an asinine statement, speaks volumes as to the insipid racism that persists among the liberal elite. She's colorblind, except for sometimes.

She felt comfortable saying it because Billy-boy has been saying the same exact thing throughout the campaign, only he dresses it up better.

She felt comfortable saying it because Hillary's campaign ads have been saying the same thing, only with better story telling.

She felt comfortable saying it because she's white.

She knows that in any given (white) office, chances are, when That Black Guy gets promoted, the gossip is going to be, he got it because That Black Guy is, well, Black. She knows when Little Boy White gets promoted, there is no gossip he got it because he is White.

Nevermind, though, the man sitting in the White House is an admitted drug fiend who got into college on legacy points and did so as much because of his daddy's pocket book as because of the color of his skin. Nevermind that when managers hire, they hire to ensure people will "fit in".... "fit in" to what is, more often than not, a primarily White setting. Nevermind that for a Person of Color to get ahead, they have to do so with an effort most White people wouldn't dream of. Nevermind that the majority of Congress is White. Nevermind any of it.

Ferraro showed her ass, and went on to whine about the drama, because she was taught from the youngest of ages that her reality was the center of the universe.

Turn on the TV if you doubt me.

And what she said?

Obama is where he is today because he is a black man?

Yeah, really, no. White people need to get over themselves. They are not the center of the universe. If someone who is not White makes progress, chances are they did so on their own.

Ferraro's statement is insulting to logic.

Think about it. Schools were racially "integrated" in her lifetime. She was alive to see Blackfolk attacked by dogs. Yet, she still wants to claim that the only reason Barack has progressed as far as he has is because he is a Black Man?

A Black man and a White man walk across the street, guess which one is more likely to be considered suspicious and/or dangerous?

A Black man and a White man commit the same crime, guess which one is more likely to be arrested?

A Black man and a White man get arrested for the same crime, guess which one is more likely to be convicted?

A Black man and a White man are convicted of the same crime, guess which one is more likely to receive the harsher sentence?

A White man and a Black man run for office, guess which one is more likely to win?

Still think it's a good day to be a Black man?

Ferraro admits that she was VP nominee because she was a woman. Yet, she has yet to make the claim that Hillary is a nominee for the same reason. Funny that. What of Shirley Chisholm? What of Frederick Douglas?

Where was I again?
Oh, right. Geraldine Ferraro.

She's a jackass who refuses to learn.

If she wants to call Barack a snake oil salesman and build her argument around that, I might, theoretically, listen. If she wants to claim that he's not the new American Saviour, yeah, ok.

But to say that Obama is where he is today because he's a Black Man?
I just LOL. Then growl.

Actually, from what I understand, having read her comments further and hearing her give an interview on some tv news talkshow, is that she was actually making a comment about the tokenism of the Obama campaign. He, or rather his race, is being used as a cover for the deep racism that as a country we are no longer able to talk about. He wouldn't be where he is, according to Ferraro, if white people weren't so eager to use him to demonstrate just how racist they aren't (but really still are). She was not claiming some sort of reverse racism or some triumph of black maleness over white femaleness, but rather that race as token/cover for racism is acceptable. I think she also extended this to make a more old-skool feminism critique that gender is yet to have achieved this level of tokenism as race, thus Clinton has this disadvantage, but hey, let's not go there because up until that point, I see her point and kinda agree.

Anyway. This and the pastor issue generated a lot of debate at the GC, especially since none of us could really disagree with what Obama's pastor was saying (America as imperialist? racism existing? DUH!) and Ferraro's comment, taken in context versus out of context, makes sense. I guess debate isn't the right word. But it did lead to a really interesting discussion of the intersections of race, gender, and (identity) politics.

i've read the texts of what ferraro said. she can polish it up all she wants the morning after on news tv, but ferraro said what she said and she also said point-blank said that a)she was attacked because she was white and b) racism works two ways.

no and no.

the only disadvantages clinton has are her own weaknesses as a candidate.

obama is only somewhat getting the white-guilt vote. but hillary is getting the fear-of-the-black vote, which she is inexplicable eliciting. (i would be surprised if the 3am phone call ad wasn't already being used in entry level "psychology of advertising" AND "racism in the media/advertising" courses.) she is also getting votes by virtue of being white. and having a white husband. she points to her experience as first lady as a qualification, no matter how LOL-worthy, an experience she gained by being white.

besides, white guilt does not explain why obama won the closed ballot box caucus (read: no witnesses) in wyoming. fear of the black vote does explain the hillary wins in ohio and texas where republicans were allowed to vote and were encouraged to do so by limbaugh. for the democrat of their choosing.

and, ok, seriously, if billy doesn't start keeping his mouth *shut* and stop using inflamatory language (oh, wow, (let's use "mugging" to talk about the black guy...). i have no idea what i'm going to do.

biting my thumb at him has not worked.

I don't really know what to say except that your use of icons in this comment thread has been fabulous.

Personally, I think the whole shebang (the Democratic primary) has come down to identity politics over race and gender, which is not to mitigate the real racism AND the real sexism that exist in this country, especially where they overlap.

::sigh:: can't they just team up on the ticket and call it a day? They'd totally beat McCain...

iconage is why i pay money to live journal.

it goes beyond just being about identity politics. that's completely glossing over a lot of mess.

they might have had a chance of teaming up if hillary hadn't fucked it up.
