the joys of nyc
Apr. 27th, 2006 11:35 ami saw the broadway show ring of fire last night, again courtesy of CL.
while it was good, i stand by my initial instinct that broadway cannot do johnny cash justice. a couple of the women actually did a better job retaining the gutterality (is that a word?) than the men. i mean, really, there is such a thing as singing cash's songs too prettily.
i also learned that the entire run of this show was set up to a)be elligible for the tony's (captain obvious) and b) run long enough to have a cd out. )because, apparently, the recordings are what make money for shows. which makes sense. i just never thought about it.)
the set was techish. huge screens serviced as backdrops. instead of a painted hotel room, there was a projection of a room with a zebra bed spread that morphed for the next scene. stuff like that. it reminded me of the karaoke bar videos. i think it was the colouring. i don't know. all in all, it was fun enough times. but with my budget, 90 bucks so would not have been worth it.
the run ends on sunday.
the threepenny opera has alan cumming and cyndi lauper.
