i'm feeling whiney.
in the event of a transit strike, my commute to work will be:
1) get a car service car to pick up my ass/walk to the car service and await a ride to the commuter train station to board an over-crowded train full of cranky folks.
2) transfer at the commuter train station for another commuter train because one quick shot to the city would be FAR TOO EASY.
3) walk from the station to my job (probably the easiest of the three).
in the event of a transit strike i will
1) have no option of calling out sick, unless i have a doctor's note. my doctor is around the corner from the damn job.
2) cancel my friday night happy hour plans.
3) cancel my trip on the yarn bus (on sunday).
4) be x-tra cranky.
ok. enough of the self-pity. predictably, i'm going to mostly side with the union on this one.
enjoy the slow-down while it lasts.
(also, nyc-ers know the secrets of the dollar vans?)

Date: 2005-12-15 11:29 pm (UTC)Ideologically, I support the strike. In reality, I'm pissed. In the name of solidarity, an extra dollar is being taken out of my paycheck. And my students, who mostly rely upon public transit, start finals tomorrow. I get to pay for the privilege of my students missing their final exams. I'm not a happy camper, even with a car.
But I'm thinking that I may have to drive Alli to Bed-Stuy tomorrow and then into Manhattan, so if you want I could maybe pick you up? Even if to drive you to LIRR? Call me in the morning if the strike is afoot.
thank ye
Date: 2005-12-16 12:10 am (UTC)i love how bloomberg is suddenly supporting the (previously OMG illegal DONT USE THEM) vans, now.
thanks for the offer. i was planning on leaving the house 8-ish. i don't have to be at work til 11ish. but getting to the station should be easyish from my house. (except for the scary, ahem, yellow-bus neighborhoods where our lives may be in commuter danger.) so, i'll call you and can pitch in for gas.

Date: 2005-12-16 05:46 am (UTC)And good ole Bloomie endorsed the vans when the Green and Orange (not the name, bt they are orange) bus lines in Queens struck over the summer. He's so friggin flip floppy...
Re: thank ye
Date: 2005-12-16 05:55 am (UTC)but it's all good. i'll take a cab to lower manhattan and walk from there.
the difference between cabbing to lirr + lirr and just fucking cabbing it is too neglibile to be worth the hassle of packed trains.
i'll walk down the street to the car service and pester them until they give me a ride. :)
