a lot has been said about how to prevent rape.
women should learn self-defense. women women should lock ourselves in their houses after dark. women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. fuck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all.

instead of that bullshit, how about (as seen from [livejournal.com profile] peaceofpie) with a few minor additions, ?

if a woman is drunk, don't rape her.
if a woman is walking alone at night, don't rape her.
if a women is drugged and unconscious, don't rape her.
if a woman is wearing a short skirt, don't rape her.
if a woman is jogging in a park at 5 am, don't rape her.
if a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you're still hung up on, don't rape her.
if a woman is asleep in her bed, don't rape her.
if a woman is asleep in your bed, don't rape her.
if a woman is doing her laundry, don't rape her.
if a woman is in a coma, don't rape her.
if a woman changes her mind in the middle of or about a particular activity, don't rape her.
if a woman has repeatedly refused a certain activity, don't rape her.

if a woman is not yet a woman, but a child, don't rape her.
if your girlfriend or wife is not in the mood, don't rape her.
if your step-daughter is watching tv, don't rape her.
if you break into a house and find a woman there, don't rape her.
if your friend thinks it's okay to rape someone, tell him it's not, and that he's not your friend.

if your "friend" tells you he raped someone, report him to the police.
if your frat-brother or another guy at the party tells you there's an unconscious woman upstairs and it's your turn, don't rape her, call the police and tell the guy he's a rapist.

tell your sons, god-sons, nephews, grandsons, sons of friends it's not okay to rape someone.

don't tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape.
don't imply that she could have avoided it if she'd only done/not done x.
don't imply that it's in any way her fault.
don't let silence imply agreement when someone tells you he "got some" with the drunk girl.
don't perpetuate a culture that tells you that you have no control over or responsibility for your actions. You can, too, help yourself.

go forth and spread the message.

I found this from [livejournal.com profile] shorxrore, who I think found it on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes. So I can't take credit for it! But yes, it is awesome.

This is great Rebecca. No really, it is. Not only is this piece dead on, there was a spicy shock value after clicking the link. But... (now here it comes) ...is it really so simple? Couldn't we generate a list of instructions for any other type of crime as well? And for environmentalism...? And for animal rights...?

And then, aren't these things laws? Or are they moral guidelines?

I'm not trying to be complacent or negative or negate this piece of writing, I just think this is an over simplification of a much larger problem. I totally agree that this stuff should be step one - clearly education and accountability are paramount.

*thinking*

This brings a question to mind - do you believe that some people are intrinsically prone to destructive acts? And if so, what do we do with these humans?

But... (now here it comes) ...is it really so simple?
well, yes. how complicated do you want to make it?
the way to stop rape is for people to not rape.

Couldn't we generate a list of instructions for any other type of crime as well?
be my guest. there are enough of these lists out there already for rape that focus on how to keep myself from being raped. which, when added together, say that i should live in my house alone and not have contact with any males. i may be a misandrist, but not entirely to that extent.

And for environmentalism...? And for animal rights...
again, be my guest. but i hadn't been aware you'd gone vegan and now consider animals to be full equals. or are you saying women are animals? i'm confused.

And then, aren't these things laws? Or are they moral guidelines?
both, really. morals tend to be ishy. but under no circumstances can i find rape acceptable. no means no. period. however, minnesota disagrees and thinks that it is perfectly legal for a man to rape his wife. new york, however, disagrees and knows that such is unacceptable.

I'm not trying to be complacent or negative or negate this piece of writing, I just think this is an over simplification of a much larger problem. I totally agree that this stuff should be step one - clearly education and accountability are paramount.
so what is your point exactly then?

This brings a question to mind - do you believe that some people are intrinsically prone to destructive acts? And if so, what do we do with these humans?
with the minimal exception of psychopaths, i think we are all in control of ourselves. some might be more prone to such actions than others, which does not excuse them from such acts. when a person who has been convicted of a sex act and has served their time, they should be released, as they should be for any crime. they should not be remanded to a state psychiatric hospital, if that's the quetion you're after.
