howard dean sent me a survey earlier last week. it was supposed to be for the democrats in "the Brooklyn area", whatever that means. they want grassroots support for "our Party's agenda".

dean's letter was addressed "dear fellow democrat".
now, i could pretend that this is a whole family-name confusion thing. (my grandmother, up until she died, had been democratic chairperson for our region of Wisconsin.) but that would be an awful lot of pretending.

i made sure to ammend the survey to state that i'm not a democrat. never have been. never will be. damnit.

the survey didn't ask my race. or my sex. or my gender. or my age. or my date of birth.
maybe they already Know.

also starkly lacking was any mention of Queer related issues. well, maybe if you want to stretch, you could say "civil rights and liberties" cover that. but you'd have to really, really stretch.
i've already amended the survey. marked it up.

seriously, the democrats want my vote but they refuse to acknowledge my existence? hell to the mother-fucking no. they couldn't even pretend to give a damn. this, ladies and gentlemen, is the party who wants to be your party. this is the party that wants to pretend it's different from the republican party. this is the party who doesn't really give a damn.

maybe it's better they don't give off false hopes and illusions. look at what they like to do with abortion: acknowledge it and sweep it under that antique heirloom inherited from great great grand-daddy rug.

i was supposed to return the survey within 72 hours with my check or money order.
it hasn't yet self-destructed and i'm not even including 2 pennies, lest they get any ideas.

dear non-fellow democrats:

let me begin by informing you i am not a member of your party and would kindly ask you stop referring to me as such.

i'd say it's nothing personal; i'm not all that into the "loser vs. loser" system. but, well, maybe it is. when you fail to acknowledge me in your party's agenda, when you refuse to mention The Gay in your survey, how can i not take it personally?

nevermind you don't seem to care about abortion except when you pretend it matters to you.
nevermind not a single living member of the democratic party voted agaisnt patriot act (part i).
nevermind the lines between you and the republican party aren't bold and bright but grey and fuzzy.

until you can give a damn about causes which won't line your pockets with cash: my Feminist Agenda, my Queer agenda, my Abortionist agenda, my Anti-war agenda, my Anti-poverty agenda and the People of Colour agendas and all the other Agendas you refuse to own but i respect, count me out of your little games.

thanks.

The only time I was mistaken for a Democrat was when the county executive was running for reelection my sophomore year in college. But it was a good thing in that he sent me (and presumably, most other people ages 18-25 who voted via absentee ballot in 2000) a blank absentee ballot. And he sent it to my college address. I forgot to request one before I left for school.
And I voted for him, but not on the Dem line, on the Working Families line (I don't mind voting for Dems when they pick up third party nominations because it counts towards that party staying on the ballot). But I was also able to vote for my theory prof, Stan Aronowitz, on the Green line, for govenor, when Cuomo and McCall so split the Dem vote that Pataki managed to sneak a third gubenatorial term in there. Dammit, liberals, sometimes its better to get rid of the Republican than determine who is more liberal, the nepotic son of the former govenor, or the former comptroller for New York City, a position that has historically been one of the most corrupt positions in this country?
Soon I'll be joining you as not a Democrat in the Brooklyn area :)

It was supposed to be a ! after country at the end of the second paragraph, btw, not a ?. I'm in a funk as my office is overheated, my fly was down all during class and none of my students bothered to mention it, and I'm super stressed.
