thoughts on the academy awards
Mar. 6th, 2006 03:54 pmi wouldn't so much say i wached them as that the tv was on to that channel while i was in and out of the kitchen doing the cooking thing (spaghetti sauce from scratch, chicken on the side, fresh salad). since the communities are a-buzz with award-talk, let me join in the fun of this topic.
a).i kinda missed what george clooney said. did he *really* say that hollywood was a bastion of civil rights and not at all racist? and that hollywood is "ahead of its time"?
goddamn. i suppose, if he said that with a straight face, he's a better actor than i thought.
b). no. it was not a conspiracy that kept brokeback from winning. so please, just don't go there. i'm so TIRED of that movie. it's not incredibly original. the short story is beyond asinine. titanic deserved that award as an epic film (faults and plotholes and bad acting) more than brokeback. (ok, and titanic had kate winslet who is better in every way than either of the guys in brokeback. and i'd have said that even when i was wallowing in denial of The Queerness.)
c). this is not to say that i OMG LOVE crash, found *it* unproblematic, or even consider it T3h best.
d). i only saw the choreography for the songs to crash and hustle and flow. they need better choreographrs that aren't so ... basic.
e). thank [deity or non-deity] that a non-computer animated movie won the animation category.
f). yes, hustle and flow is problematic. welcome to hollywood, people. why are far fewer people complaining about a history of violence? (psst. bonus points for the most original answer.)
g). what the hell does calling june carter cash a "real woman" mean? particularly since this was in the context of reese w. competing (if that's the right word. she wasn't even really acting since she hasn't really grown since overnight delivery) against felicity h.'s transwoman-character (which, problematic, was, at least, somewhat challenging).
h). the internets tell me jon stewart is an ass. no, i don't care who you are, it is *NOT* ok to make transphobic statements. in fact, i will up the anty and say it is LESS OK for someone of jon s's status to make such a "ladies, gentelmen, felicity", statement than a known-asshole like, say, jack nicholson since everyone and their neighbor should know by now that man's an ass.
