media rant.
Apr. 27th, 2004 12:41 amrather than edit the previous post, (i started this before any discussion started in the last one, and i'm continuing it, just adding a few more detials), i'd like to add that i'm REALLY PISSED at the miscounting of numbers. there's no way in hell there were only 500,000 there. 500,000 men maybe.
even the liberal french paper is citing the crappy 500,000 number.
fuck.
and i wonder why i don't read the paper.
it's times like now that i really think i should have gone the journalist route. but i doubt i would have been able to get the proper numbers out, even if i hadn't ended up burning out from being over-edited.
i (briefly) knew this portugese journalist once upon a time, and he was just so. . . a voice for the system. . .it wasn't funny. but even he had disagreements with his editors back in lisbon. and i'm not talking about his pathetic love for america being edited out, but other stuff too.
so, i don't know. sure, i know the whys and wherefores of how media work. especially now with the way everybody owns each other.
i know that media biases exist. hello? how often does anything deviate from promoting the status quo?
it's all about the framing. 500,000 isn't anywhere nearly as impressive as the numbers naral gathered by collecting our names, addresses, telephone numbers, and emails to ensure no double counting. (they're recounting now, in case anyone went and doesn't know about it, yet:
http://prochoiceaction.org/campaign/be_counted .) if the media says 500,000 women out of the entire nation got together to protest, that's great. but 1.15 million that's awesome. we can't possibly have awesome, now can we?
ok, example: why do you think more often than not when you see pictures of "welfare mothers" on tv they are black? when, in reality, you have more white people receiving public assistance? {jeopardy music} racism? framing? hey! both are right! (and so are many other similar answers!)
the media lie all the fucking time. anyone who still thinks that the media has a liberal bias, especially when they're going to school for this shit and should have learned better by now, is a fool.
ok, i have to stop. this isn't getting me anywhere and it's killing my high from sunday.
on another note, i'm going to see conan wednesday.
andy won't be there.
but i do have extra tickets if anybody wants to come along with me. (if you've read this far, you probably deserve it.) taping's at 4. you don't really have to be there until maybe an hour before. let me know.
