rkt: (intersection)
i got this from elsewhere on the internet from a source who wasn't really getting it.

apparently, Mena Suvari (of american beauty fame) is soon to be seen in a movie based on a true story.
the real life person she's playing is Black.
mira, in case you've missed the memo, is not Black. but she does wear corn rows for the movie!

from jezebel
In an interview with Premiere magazine, Mena says of the decision to have cornrows: "It was in conjunction with [director] Stuart. I think we just wanted to kind of establish Brandi as a particular kind of girl from a particular place. I think that we felt that it would be, like, Providence, Rhode Island, with a mix of cultures. That's kind of what we were going for."
(emphasis mine.)

la times article (She's trying to "stimulate herself as an actor" by taking on this role.)

the premier article in question
in which Mena also states:"I don't see race per se as setting any boundaries or limits, and it was really a story that I identified with."

Ok, look, i find it beyond hard to believe that there were no women of color available to take on this role. I'm not going to waste my fingers asking "why?????" Mena is testing my patience on So. Many. Levels with her asinine remarks and responses it isn't even funny. i'm tempted to buy her a clue and send it to her, but i'm not sure it's a wise use of my limited resources. she "identified" with the role of a young black woman who is currently in prison? really?

P.S. the boyfriend of the story, who seemingly shares more of blame in the fictionalized story, stays Black.
