i went on a movie spree this weekend.

hustle and flow= 4(/5) stars

the wedding crashers= 3(/5) stars

the arisotcrats= 3(/5) stars

also, coke has a new "commercial".

remember (and, i realize some of you may not) the new seekers song - "i'd like to teach the world to sing/and furnish it with love" song? the one they used once upon a time in their commercials? the hippies surrounding the hills....

yeah, well, they've revamped it to "i'd like to teach the world to jam/and chill with it awhile"; "urban" youth on a rooftop somewhere singing/jamming... which could have great potential, but just doesn't live up to it. it's just... off. i haven't put my finger on it, yet... and i'm not saying this as a purist, which i can be. or someone who hates coke the company but has a fondness for coke the drink, which, again, i am. but as someone who is otherwise all about the cover song and thus quite disappointed.*

this was really the biggest disappointment of the experience. and i wasn't even expecting it. and then i experienced it twice.

as far as the movies themselves: i expected more from the aristocrats. (i'm not sure how i was expecting more, i just wanted more from it.) a lot less from the wedding crashers. (but it *is* a christopher walken flick... which was the appeal.) and a little bit more from hustle and flow. (or maybe, not so much more as a little bit less of the misogyny and violence.

*i may have lost 99% of my college writing, but goddamn, if my mp3s didn't survive my computer crash of 05.

My reviews of Hustle and Flow and The Aristrocrats are the opposite of yours. I expected more from Hustle ("ooh, Sundance loved it, it must be fantastic!", and the misogyny was more than I could handle. Whereas when I saw The Aristocrats all I was expecting was belly laughs, and I got them in spades.

Finger-down-the-throat gesture at "I'd like to teach the world to jam/and chill with it awhile." Of course, it's easier for me because I've never liked Coke the drink, nor any cola.

all three of them were problematic.

i was expecting a lot more laughing on my part for aristcrats, the sort, ahem, south park gives me, and i didn't get them nearly as much as i hoped for.

i was trying to find the whole set of lyrics for the "new version", but not even coke has a link for this commercial. . .

can you place the many whys of that song's suckiness? i can start, but then i don't get beyond that.

i haven't seen it on tv. i'm hoping i don't.

i hate that commercial as well and i don't think we're alone. it probably did have huge potential and might've worked better if they'd done it in the '90's. and the people who are singing have weak voices which you can't have if you're going to feature individuals as they tried to (guy w/ the guitar and fizzled pompadour).

i really want to see the skeleton key. but i can't say i expected much from Hustle & Flow. i think people make a big deal out of Terrance Howard and i honestly don't get what the critics get from him. but i haven't seen Hustle & Flow yet so i shouldn't jump the gun.

i agree with your commercial assessment.

as far as hustle & flow goes... i'm not sure if it's entirely worth 10+ change in and of itself. it has A LOT of misogyny going on (c'mon... one of the main songs is all about "bitches"... and how hard it is for the pimp...) it's not the sort of movie that Needs to be seen on the big screen, either.

i have to admit, if it wasn't indie, it'd have had a lower rating. i'd thought i stopped giving severe leniency to independent movies.

hi...and a question

I'm spamming your LJ with off-topicness to try to get some info. I know your job is something to do with a shelter, but now I can't remember if it's a homeless shelter, or a women's shelter, or DV shelter or what. I've got some questions I'm hesitant to post online in say the socialwork comm re: teen dating violence and the chance of filed charges sticking and thought you might know the answers, or someone/some resource online who does...or is it completely state to state? I can email if I'm too vague, but I'm trying to figure things out for a client and for my own mental sanity. :\

charges are generally state to state. but i might be able to direct you if i have a firmer grasp on the question.

if it has to do with the shadiness of police officers/etc. your client may not have much hope. (this has been a recent theme at my shelter. though, not currently involving any of my clients.)

i do know that wisconsin (in appearance) tends to be more lenient in favor of the ;woman' (it should be survivor, but let's face reality, the leniency is in favor of the female depicted as victim, which makes her in need of protection) in dv-type cases. i'm pretty sure they, or at least more local jurisdictions, tend to have a "must-arrest" law, where one person HAS to be arrested in dv-type calls.

if any of this is unclear. or if it doesn't answer the question you have, email me. @ yahoo.
