Runaway Bride Says "I Do" to TV

Runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks might have scooted away from the altar, but she's not hesitating to say "I do" to a television project about her misadventures.
ReganMedia, which produces television shows and has published books by authors such as porn star Jenna Jameson and shock jock Howard Stern, said Thursday that it has acquired the media rights to the life stories of Wilbanks and her fiance, John Mason.
Wilbanks will reportedly be raking in a cool $500,000 for the tale of how she staged her own kidnapping just four days before her lavish wedding in April. ReganMedia has not confirmed that any funds changed hands.
"I am looking forward to developing the scripted project with Wilbanks and Mason," ReganMedia President Judith Regan said in a statement. "Theirs is an unexpected and compelling story of love and forgiveness that has certainly taught me a thing or two."
Wilbanks, a 32-year-old nurse from Duluth, Georgia, took a bus to Albuquerque, New Mexico, but told police she was abducted and had been sexually assaulted. She later changed her story, admitting she had fled her home for personal reasons.
Before officials learned that Wilbanks had faked her kidnapping, her hometown spent almost $43,000 on searching for her. Wilbanks has since paid back $13,249.
Earlier this month, Wilbanks pleaded no contest to a felony charge of making a false statement to police and was sentenced to two years of probation and 120 hours of community service. She was also ordered to continue mental health treatment and was fined an additional $2,550 to be paid to the sheriff's office.
However, the fact that the runaway bride will now be profiting from her case of cold feet has some folks in her hometown up in arms.
"I just think it's sinful that we are allowed to profit over wrongdoings," Duluth Mayor Shirley Lasseter told the Associated Press. "I think every cent she makes needs to be given to organizations for missing children and adults so it can be used to help someone in a situation which she created falsely."
Meanwhile, Wilbanks' spokesman, Andy Parsons, defended his client's choice to strike a deal.
"What John and Jennifer have gone through, the lies cast about, the way their past has been dragged through the media, the way they've been vilified by sectors of the public and the media--if they do do something, good luck to them," Parsons told the Washington Post.
Wilbanks' contract with ReganMedia reportedly included a deal that her first media interview would be conducted with NBC, though the network insists it did not pay for her participation.
Last weekend, Katie Couric conducted the first interview with the runaway bride in Atlanta for an hourlong special to air on NBC on Tuesday.
