wow, an update!

i have no idea what my problem's been with the lack of lj-update mojo.

one of my friend's had a fire in her apartment last week. while she was sleeping, apparently, her stove spontaneously caught on fire. no candles. she hadn't been cooking. no cigarettes. nothing.

she woke up, thinking she was having an asthma attack and called 911 before nyfd took 20 minutes to show up.
for the most part, her place is ok. she needs a new floor covering, and that's going to cost.. some of her stuff got damaged and that's going to cost.

the nyfd see no reason to investigate.

this makes me think, now more than ever, i seriously need to get some renter's insurance.
i was talking with the best friend about this...
but my biggest investment is the books.
hypothetically speaking, let's say something were to happen, what would the insurance company say to me submitting a claim for over $2000 in books?
if i take pictures, they'd either get lost in the fire, etc. or they'd have to be stored elsewhere which might look suspicious.
the only other thing i have any sort of attachment to is the damn bed i got 15 years ago to lug to nyc. and the receipt for that is long since gone.

which, really, means i should just talk to an Agent. which means pulling out the internet research skills to find companies to contact. (anyone have any experience/suggestions here?)

but it's hot which makes me whiny and lazy.
but i'll make it my summer goal.

I have cheap-o insurance from Balboa (http://www.balboainsurance.com). If my property dies in one of the ways the policy approves of (ie: I can't be foolish and accidentally light my place on fire), I get up to $10k but there are $500 maximums for lots of different items, including cds and dvds. Books, too, probably, although I didn't think to be worried about it at the time.

$500 would definitely replace some books, though.
