Not only is it insane, you have to be there by like 8 pm to actually be in Times Square, not just relegated to a side street. Then you can't leave, or you won't get back in. Theres a lack of portapottyage. And it's usually pretty frickin cold. So you're standing there, in the cold, having to pee, for four hours, watching dick clark on the jumbotron, for the ten seconds it takes to drop the damn ball. Then you have to clear out of Times Square within half an hour or so, you and all 30,000 other nutjobs who wanted to see the ball drop. And screw the subways at Times Square - they shut down most of the entrances. And screw the subways near Times Square - those get overrun to. So you're likely having to walk dozens of blocks, either to your destination or to a subway that isn't overrun, waiting for trains that aren't jammed so that you can get on.
I've never been, but I've heard horror stories. Thats why real NYers leave it to the tourists and either stay at home, go to a party, or go to a bar/club.
